There is one critical learning tool that often gets overlooked, and that impacts around 80% of everything a child learns in the classroom.

We are talking about their eyes.

At Gulf and Ranges Optometrists, we regularly see bright kids who are struggling at school because they cannot see properly.

What makes this heartbreaking is that children rarely complain about vision issues. To them, the blurry whiteboards, overlapping text, or double vision they experience is completely normal—they assume everyone sees the world exactly the way they do.

School Vision Screenings

Gulf and Ranges Optometrists regularly conduct school screenings, a fantastic way to catch children with vision issues that may not have been to see an optometrist yet. Recent research found that 1 in 5 kids have an undetected vision problem.

School screenings test for visual acuity – we are looking for how well a child can read letters on a wall chart.

While reading a standard chart is a helpful baseline, classroom learning requires a range of complex visual skills. A child can have perfect 20/20 distance vision and still fail at reading or concentrating.

A comprehensive eye test done by your optometrist is looking for:

  • Eye Tracking:
The ability of the eyes to move smoothly across a page of text without losing their place or skipping lines.
  • Eye Focusing:
The ability to quickly change focus from a distant object (like the classroom whiteboard) to a near object (like a laptop or notebook) and back again.
  • Eye Teaming (Binocular Vision):
How well both eyes work together as a coordinated team. If they don’t align perfectly, a child might experience double vision or intense fatigue.
  • Near Vision Depth:
Checking up-close reading vision, which is where kids spend the vast majority of their learning day.

When “Behavioural Issues” Are Actually Vision Issues

When a child struggles with eye tracking or focusing, reading becomes physically exhausting. Within fifteen minutes, they might develop a mild headache, eye strain, or find that the words begin to dance or blur on the page.

Because they don’t have the vocabulary to say, “My binocular vision is failing to accommodate near-distance tasks,” they react the only way they know how: they check out or play up.

It is common for children with undetected vision problems to be misdiagnosed with behavioural challenges, learning difficulties, or attention deficit issues. A child who is constantly fidgeting, looking out the window, avoiding reading, or acting out during quiet study time isn’t necessarily being disruptive—they might just be trying to escape the physical discomfort of eye strain.

Subtle Signs of a Vision Problem

While kids won’t always tell you they can’t see, their habits will. Keep an eye out for these subtle indicators at home and in the classroom:

  • Holding books or screens unusually close to their face.
  • Tilting their head or closing one eye while reading or watching TV.
  • Frequent eye rubbing, blinking, or watering eyes.
  • Losing their place frequently or using a finger to track words on a page.
  • A sudden, unexplained drop in school marks or a reluctance to do homework.
  • Complaints of headaches, dizziness, or tired eyes at the end of the school day.

The Digital Strain: A New Generation of Issues

Today’s classroom and home are very different today than a generation ago. With digital tablets, laptops, and smartboards a key component of learning, children’s eyes are working hard.

Prolonged screen time decreases our natural blink rate, which can lead to dry, irritated eyes. It also keeps young eyes locked into a tight, near-focus position for hours on end, which can accelerate the development of myopia (short-sightedness).

Regular, comprehensive eye exams allows your optometrist to monitor changes and discuss lifestyle adjustments, specialised lens technology, or myopia management strategies to protect your child’s long-term eye health.
