How do I stop my glasses from fogging up?
Your glasses fog up when warm air comes in contact with the cooler surface of the lenses of your glasses.
The most effective ways to keep your glasses fog free include:
Soap and Water
Gently wash your glasses with mild soap and warm water. Ensure that there aren’t any soap suds left on the lens, shake off the excess water and let them air dry. The soap leaves behind a thin film that acts as a fog barrier to prevent your glasses from getting foggy.
Anti-fog Products
Anti-fog spray or wipes work well by dispersing the fog droplets from your lenses. Spray on both sides of the lens after cleaning. You may need to repeat the spray a few times.
Gulf and Ranges Optometrists have anti-fog cloths which are great for reducing foggy lenses, the cloths were used throughout COVID masking and we can attest that the cloths worked really well.
Anti-fog Lenses
These are lenses made with an anti-fog coating. The coating can be useful if you find yourself with foggy lenses from playing sport, cooking, or wearing a face mask.
Adjusting Masks
If your glasses fog when you are wearing a mask, press the wire at the top of the mask tight against the bridge of your nose and the top of your cheeks. This reduces the warm air from your breath trying escape this way. You can also place your glasses firmly over the top of your mask to create a seal to reduce the amount of warm air going towards your glasses.
And try folding a tissue till it’s about 1cm (horizontally) then put that inside the top of your mask and against the bridge of your nose. The tissue will help absorb the moisture from your breath and reduce your glasses fogging up. You may have to staple the tissue in place.
Why are my glasses so hard to clean?
Crystal-clear lenses – not only ensure better vision, they lengthen the life of your glasses.
Tissues, shirt sleeves or other bits of clothing fabric should not be used to clean your glasses.
Clothing and tissues quite often have tiny bits of dust or dirt that you can’t see, but when you rub your glasses, your lenses get micro scratches that build up over time and end up impairing your vision. The scratches act as a light disperser which irritates your eyes.
Scratches can’t be removed from plastic or glass lenses, so you have to purchase new glasses.

How to clean your glasses properly
1. Gently rub a micro-fibre cloth or a lens cleaning cloth over the glasses lens to remove coarse dirt particles.
Dry cloths are not always ideal if you need to remove greasy substances. To get a better result, spray the cloth with a lens cleaning spray. Don’t spray the lenses as frames have small holes and if liquids constantly enter these holes, it can have an adverse effect over the long term.
2. Hold your glasses under lukewarm running water. Then rub the lenses with a drop of pH-neutral washing-up liquid between your fingers until suds are formed.
Rinse the lenses again under running water and dry them gently but thoroughly with a microfibre cloth.
Always hold your glasses on the side of the frames when you are cleaning. This helps avoid warping or, even worse, breaking them.
It’s also a good idea to occasionally clean the sides of the frames and the nose-pads. Removing greasy substances from the pads improves the fit of your glasses, and helps prevent slipping.

How to store my glasses?
The best way to store your glasses is in a hard case whenever you’re not wearing them. If you don’t have a case with you, put them in a safe spot with the lenses facing upwards.
And don’t expose your glasses to extreme heat (for instance on your car’s dashboard) as the lenses and frames can be damaged, and if you have a lens coating the durability will also be affected.
